The person behind Ally
Hi, I'm David
I've run R for the Rest of Us since 2019. In that time, I've taught thousands of people to use R through self-paced courses and cohort programs, produced hundreds of blog posts and videos, spoken at conferences, and written a book on R.
But AI? That's new for all of us, me included. Nobody has it figured out yet. So I'm doing what I did with R: learning it for real, in the open, and helping you figure it out along the way. Whether you're writing your first line of R or your ten thousandth, that's what Ally is for.

AI can't do much for you if you don't understand how R works. New to R? The core courses take you from your first line of code to real projects. Already use R? The guides give you the background on specific topics that you need to work well with AI.
Core courses
New to R? Take these courses in order.
From "what's R?" to "I love R!"
These courses have helped thousands learn R.

Getting Started With R
One of the main obstacles that many new R users face is simply getting started. This free course is designed to get new users, no matter what’s holding you back, up and running quickly. It takes you step-by-step, helping you download exactly what you need to get started.

Course 2

Fundamentals of R
R can be intimidating. I know because it intimidated me before I learned how to use it.
But the thing is, you don't need to know everything about R in order to use it.
Fundamentals of R takes a focused approach, helping you learn the fundamental skills that you need to succeed.

Going Deeper with R
Once you’ve got the fundamentals of R down, you can do a lot with R. But what happens when:
Your data isn’t in the right format to plot with
You get messy data and don’t know how to deal with it
You want to go beyond reports to produce presentations, dashboards, and website from Quarto documents
These are just a few of the questions that Going Deeper with R is designed to answer.
Guides
Know R? Go deeper, one topic at a time.
Short guides that give you the background knowledge needed to work effectively with AI assistants.
Data Cleaning
Real data never arrives ready to use. The everyday cleaning moves in R and the packages that handle them, so you can point an AI assistant at the right one.
Data Viz Principles
What separates a polished, persuasive chart from a default one. The design thinking behind {ggplot2}, so you can guide an AI assistant and judge what it hands back.
Designing Effective Tables
A table is a data visualization, too. How to guide the reader’s eye with {gt}, a package that follows good design principles by default, so you can steer an AI assistant.
Mapping with R
What geospatial data is, then how to make static and interactive maps and do some geospatial analysis. Enough of the concepts and tools to direct an AI assistant.
Packages
From a first custom function to an installable package. Enough of each step and its tools that you can direct an AI assistant through the details.
Git and GitHub
Version control for R users. How Git tracks your work and how GitHub shares it, so you can let an AI assistant change your code without fear of losing anything.
