Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model Reports
Judi’s House/JAG Institute is a Colorado-based nonprofit organization providing direct service, training and education, and evaluation and research support on childhood bereavement. In 2018, JAG Institute created the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model® (CBEM) to approximate the rates of children and youth who experience the loss of a parent or sibling before reaching adulthood.
Judi’s House/JAG Institute produces annual CBEM reports on the national and state level. But, until 2021, they had never broken down the data by race and ethnicity. The complexity of working with this data and the need to produce reports that would clearly communicate results on this difficult subject led Judi’s House/JAG Institute to reach out to R for the Rest of Us.
Working together, we produced reports looking at disparities in childhood bereavement by race and ethnicity. These reports feature high-quality data visualization align with Judi’s House/JAG Institute branding. This design, combined with a layout done entirely in RMarkdown, makes it easy for lay audiences to understand the results.
We were able to produce these reports at both the national and state level using a technique known as parameterized reporting. Working with R for the Rest of Us allowed Judi’s House/JAG Institute to disseminate vital information about how youth among different racial and ethnic groups are impacted by bereavement advance their vision that no child should be alone in grief.
